I was honored to represent Iron Mountain at the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh on July 15, sponsored by US Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) and hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. The summit’s themes, and the expertise of those attending from business, educational institutions and government, provided an excellent forum for discussing how we advance technologies and partnerships that are essential for continued growth and progress across the Commonwealth.

As CEO of Iron Mountain, I believe that the future of innovation hinges on meaningful collaboration between these three bodies. World-class universities, a dynamic business landscape, and a forward-thinking government mean Pennsylvania is in prime position to lead this charge.

My conviction stems from our company’s long association with the Commonwealth, and my own connections with Pennsylvania - having served on CMU’s Board of Trustees, and as a proud alumnus of Tepper School of Business.

With its welcoming business environment, abundant energy resources, and world-class universities and tech research institutions, Pennsylvania has always been a compelling place for Iron Mountain to do business. These elements create a dynamic ecosystem that fosters progress - and by accelerating active collaboration, we can unlock its full potential.

Iron Mountain has a strong presence in the Commonwealth, employing approximately 1,100 people and operating more than 35 facilities. Our partnership with the state runs deep across the breadth of our solutions portfolio, and has a particular emphasis on digital innovation. A prime example was during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID pandemic.

Digital capabilities and agility

When the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry faced a surge in unemployment claims - going from 1,000 requests a week to 27,000 in a single day, and over two million by June 2020 - we stepped in to help. By rapidly deploying our digital capabilities from six service centers across the state, we helped the agency remotely process unemployment claims, clearing a significant backlog and enabling the state to pay out an astounding $29 billion in benefits to citizens in need.

This swift action is a testament to our digital capabilities and agility, and is an example of effective business partnership with government. It led to further digital transformation work with other government agencies, which today leverages AI-led technologies such as our InSight ® Digital Experience Platform (DXP) to drive greater efficiency and value for money for US citizens.

Data center infrastructure

Our commitment to Pennsylvania extends to energy initiatives, especially in our data centers business. Iron Mountain has been an early and influential data center player in Pennsylvania, helping to shape and enact legislation that supports the industry’s growth within the state.

Our data center in Boyers is one of the most efficient and sustainable in our global portfolio, and uses innovative geothermal cooling technology - part-funded through a state grant - from the facility’s underground lake to reduce energy consumption.

This pioneering spirit underscores my strong belief in Pennsylvania's potential as a forward- thinking technology hub. By working together with government and educational institutes like CMU, businesses like Iron Mountain can create vital opportunities to develop cutting-edge AI technologies and skills that will drive economic growth and enhance public services. This collaborative ecosystem will ensure Pennsylvania remains at the forefront of technological advancement, attracting talent and investment while equipping its workforce with the expertise needed for an AI-driven future.

Iron Mountain is proud of our investments in Pennsylvania and our ongoing commitment to the Keystone State. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with our partners in education and government to foster technological advancement, and to contributing to the state’s prosperity for many years to come. Let's work together to build a future for Pennsylvania that is defined by innovation, sustainability, and unparalleled economic opportunity.
